Hard Hat Detection

Detects whether hard hats are worn in head-protection zones, including zone-specific rules where the required helmet type differs by area or task.

Hard hat detection across head-protection zones

What it detects

Harvested from the computer-vision use-case columns of the Q3 industry papers. Every item below is a rule you can switch on, tune per zone and report on.

Hard hat presence by zone

Flags anyone inside a head-protection area without a helmet in view, per area rather than site-wide.

Helmet type and colour

Distinguishes helmet classes or colours where the zone or role requires a specific one.

Entry to a controlled area

Checks head protection at the threshold, so the violation surfaces as the person crosses in.

Contractors and visitors

Covers gates, induction points and walk-through routes where non-permanent personnel are most often missed.

Helmet removed during work

Detects a helmet taken off mid-task, which a spot check at the gate would never catch.

Combined PPE sets

Correlates helmet with hi-vis, gloves and footwear so partial compliance is reported as partial.

Overhead-work and dropped-object zones

Applies the rule with priority where elevated activity is in progress above the area.

Compliance rate by area, shift and crew

Turns the raw detections into a breakdown an HSE lead can take to a review meeting.

Where it applies

The sub-sectors below are the ones the Q3 industry papers name for this detection. Each links to the industry hub.

In Oil & Gas

PPE compliance per zone on drilling rigs, offshore platforms, refineries and construction sites.

How it works

01

Runs on the cameras you already have

Inference happens at the edge on your existing CCTV and IP streams. No new camera estate, no video leaving site, no cloud round-trip in the detection loop.

02

Thresholds and zones you configure

Draw the zone, set the rule, set the dwell, count and confidence thresholds. Rules differ by area, shift and task, because sites do.

03

Evidence, not just alerts

Every event is logged with camera, zone, timestamp and a clip, so the record is reviewable afterwards and usable in a corrective action.

04

Integrates with what you already run

Events push into your VMS, alerting and reporting stack through Fogsphere Manager, with dashboards broken down by area, shift and crew.

Risk & control objective

The Q3 chemical paper puts the limitation of first-generation PPE detection plainly: the useful question is not whether a worker is wearing a helmet, but whether the correct PPE is in place for that operational area. A site-wide helmet rule generates alerts in places where a helmet was never required and stays quiet in the places that matter.

The control objective is therefore zone-specific head protection with an auditable record behind it. What the operator gains is a defensible compliance rate per area and per crew, plus the timestamped evidence to close out a corrective action — the thing ISO 45001 incident investigation and continual improvement actually asks for.
